What made you first get into fitness?

I remember walking into a fitness club for the first time at the age of 16. I was always into sports and athletics, but when I saw the gym, I felt like I had just found my new favorite spot. Learning about weightlifting and taking my very first aerobics class, opened my eyes to a whole new world. There was one specific fitness instructor who took me under her wing and taught me the ropes. She inspired me and motivated me to dive into the fitness world full steam ahead. I graduated high school when I was 17 and knew what I wanted to do in life. I wanted to help people heal, grow to be the best version of themselves — and love themselves through the awesome world of fitness and exercise. I went on to college to achieve my bachelor’s degree in exercise science. I am now a proud owner of my own fitness club.

What made you first get into fitness?

I started my fitness journey in college, but it was substantially different than it is today.  When it began, I was running mostly, with limited interest in weightlifting. I maintained that level of activity for about 10 years. Just over two years ago, I got back into it because my eating and life habits had gone downhill. I had gained weight and wasn’t comfortable with what I was becoming. At that time, I was even running 40+ miles per week — but my body was used to it and it was going nowhere! I’ve since then, created a new lifestyle for myself and it is awesome.

What made you first get into fitness?

My brother has Muscular Dystrophy and I decided that I shouldn't waste my abilities when there are people out there like him who just can't, no matter how bad they want to.

What motivates you to show up every day?

Knowing that if I want to be successful in this industry, I have to push harder than anyone else. I try my best to go to bed every night knowing that I left it all in the gym, and that I tried my best to out-work my future competition.

What made you first get into fitness?

The short answer is sports, specifically ice hockey. My weight was always on the featherweight side and as I advanced in rank, I needed to put on muscle. Once I started lifting, I realized that in the weight room, even though I only have one hand, I was no different.

What made you first get into fitness?

As a child, I was really into Arnold Schwarzenegger. I would dress like the Terminator and walk around the house. As I became a teenager, I started to hit the gym and do PT with my stepdad, who was military. All that came to an end when I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Following that — depression hit pretty hard. It got to the point of needing alcohol just to start my day. Then I found out I was going to be a dad. I told myself that I can get my act together and be a positive influence — or be a bummed out dad. So I started hitting the gym again.

What made you first get into fitness?

My father is definitely responsible for me getting into fitness. It started with him letting me take a few karate classes. This led to backyard baseball, and eventually being trained as a master fitness trainer and nutritionist while serving in the Army.

What made you first get into fitness?

I have been a three-sport athlete since I was little. In high school I played volleyball, basketball, softball, ran cross country and was a sprinter and jumper in track. To participate in these sports, I was required to take a weight training class. This was something that became a routine for my workouts, and after graduating from high school, it stuck with me. I always got asked why I didn’t compete in fitness competitions. I knew they were expensive and they were all out of state. One day a coworker came up to me while I was working out and said, “Janea, there is a fitness competition happening in Boise in about 12 weeks, let’s do it!” Without hesitation I said, “Hell yeah!” I competed in my first fitness competition in the fall of 2013. Fast forward almost four years later, and I am nationally-qualified in the NPC and I competed in my first Junior National show.

What motivates you to show up every day?

It's true what they say: Once you see progress, showing up becomes an addiction. I'm motivated by the progress and self-improvement I see and feel day-by-day. I don't necessarily mean the scale numbers, or even the "big" wins, either. It's the incremental victories that let me know I'm on the right path, and keep me hungry for more — lifting a heavier weight, sprinting a little bit faster than when I started, or feeling my form improve when I'm repping out push ups. Looking out for benchmarks like these keeps me motivated, and has turned "showing up" into a lifestyle.
