Dissident Spotlight: James Doherty

Dissident Spotlight: James Doherty

What made you first get into fitness?

My brother has Muscular Dystrophy and I decided that I shouldn't waste my abilities when there are people out there like him who just can't, no matter how bad they want to.

What motivates you to show up every day?

Knowing that if I want to be successful in this industry, I have to push harder than anyone else. I try my best to go to bed every night knowing that I left it all in the gym, and that I tried my best to out-work my future competition.

What are your health and fitness goals for the future?

My short-term goal would be to stand on stage and own it — be up there and look like I belong. Not to just show up, but to win it all. My long-term goal is to stand on the Olympia stage and compete with the absolute best.

What is your favorite exercise?

My favorite exercise has to be cable flyes. I love the pump that I get from the constant tension.

What made you choose Dissident Gym Wear and how do you relate to the DISSIDENT brand's message?

My brother was a great baseball player, until his Muscular Dystrophy took effect and made it to where he couldn't throw or run like he used to. Now he is in a wheelchair and can't lift his arms above his head. When Dissident Gym Wear reached out to me about being an ambassador, and I read that they give to the Challenged Athletes Foundation, I knew I wanted to be a part of this amazing company.

What is your favorite Dissident piece?

My favorite piece is the gym bag. I love that it's large enough for all of my equipment and also has the separate shoe pocket — so that I don't have to have shoes that I just worked out with in the main pocket with the rest of my stuff.

What is your proudest fitness achievement?

My proudest achievement has to be the progress that I've made since my shoulder surgery.

What is your advice to anyone seeking to improve their health and fitness lifestyle?

There's no day like today to get out there and make a positive change in your life. Don't be the person in the future who looks back and wishes that they had done something.

What is your favorite quote?

“One day or day one. You decide.” — Unknown

A particularly frustrating part of struggle is the ability that it has to stop us dead in our tracks IF we allow it. The potential embarrassment of failure freezes us. The possibility for rejection discourages us. The idea of disappointment makes us check out of the game.

Our world today is a convection of deception, constantly the bullshit is on the rise, and the truth, subsurface and disregarded. We must hold true and steady the course through the lies and contradictions. We have to hold the line between our own lives, and the world that tries to breach in.

Be Thankful

Gratitude is something we could all benefit from. Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means learning to live your life as if everything were a miracle, and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you’ve been given. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present.
