Dissident Spotlight: Zack Farias

What made you first get into fitness?
Funny story, really — one of my friends joined a gym in hopes of becoming a wrestler. He nagged me for months to join with him. I did it really to just support him.

What motivates you to show up every day?

Gym time is "me time.” It's my therapy. Every day counts! The saying, "The only bad workout is the one you missed" is so true!

What are your health and fitness goals for the future?

I want to break into the 1K Pound Club in my current weight class (148) and I'm so, so close — abs by Summer 2018!

What is your favorite exercise?

Definitely would be deadlifts for two reasons. First: It's my strongest lift. Second: With deadlifts, you either get it or you don't — unlike the squat, which people can argue depth and the bench press where using momentum can be argued.

What made you choose Dissident Gym Wear and how do you relate to the DISSIDENT brand's message?

I love what this brand stands for, and the community around it — motivate and inspire! I visit the Facebook page daily. I love the support it provides to all the team members.

What is your favorite Dissident piece?

My “EARNED NOT GIVEN” tank, for sure! It's extremely comfortable and the message is spot-on. It's a reminder to myself of where I started. When I started working out three years ago, I literally started with the bar on bench press and now I'm pushing over 200!

What is your proudest fitness achievement?

Definitely winning my first powerlifting competition. I did it not to win, but to see where I stood. I was so shocked! I couldn't believe it! Also, this past weekend, I won first place in the 148 Open Drug-Free division at the Battle of the Iron Barbarians in Fulton, Mississippi. I beat my previous total by 91.4! I PR'd on all three lifts.

What is your advice to anyone seeking to improve their health and fitness lifestyle?

Be hungry for knowledge. Learn as much as you can from everyone. Research, research, research! Be consistent in your workouts and your nutrition — slow and steady wins the race.

What is your favorite quote?

"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." — J.R.R. Tolkien

A particularly frustrating part of struggle is the ability that it has to stop us dead in our tracks IF we allow it. The potential embarrassment of failure freezes us. The possibility for rejection discourages us. The idea of disappointment makes us check out of the game.

Our world today is a convection of deception, constantly the bullshit is on the rise, and the truth, subsurface and disregarded. We must hold true and steady the course through the lies and contradictions. We have to hold the line between our own lives, and the world that tries to breach in.

Be Thankful

Gratitude is something we could all benefit from. Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means learning to live your life as if everything were a miracle, and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you’ve been given. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present.
