Dissident Spotlight: Gerry Edwards

What made you first get into fitness?

I was 300+ lbs, on the verge of diabetes and has high blood pressure — living a very unhealthy biker lifestyle. I ordered Insanity back in 2012 and lost 75 lbs. Then I went to professional wrestling school and started chasing a childhood dream!

What motivates you to show up every day?

Remembering the larger than life wrestlers I watched growing up. I'm never satisfied with my current build. I see the progress and want more!

What are your health and fitness goals for the future?

I just want to look like a monster when I step into the ring. I'm already bigger than most guys I've encountered in the ring, but I want to be bigger and leaner.

What is your favorite exercise?

Lat raises + front raises + rear-delt raises — GIANT SET!

What made you choose Dissident Gym Wear and how do you relate to the DISSIDENT brand's message?

Besides the fact that the apparel is awesome, I really like the encouragement to be proud of who you are and how far you've come. Most brands are obsessed with aesthetics but some of the best athletes I know don't look like underwear models. The Dissident family is always there for one another to motivate, encourage, and support. I'm proud to represent such a positive brand and be part of such a diverse family of athletes!

What is your favorite Dissident piece?

I love the gym bag! It has enough room for all of my gear!

What is your proudest fitness achievement?

My proudest achievement is the lifestyle change I've made. Training daily, meal prepping, and pursuing my goals give me a sense of purpose.

What is your advice to anyone seeking to improve their health and fitness lifestyle?

You don't have to change everything all at once. That's where most diets fail. It shouldn't feel like you're punishing yourself.

What is your favorite quote?

You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

A particularly frustrating part of struggle is the ability that it has to stop us dead in our tracks IF we allow it. The potential embarrassment of failure freezes us. The possibility for rejection discourages us. The idea of disappointment makes us check out of the game.

Our world today is a convection of deception, constantly the bullshit is on the rise, and the truth, subsurface and disregarded. We must hold true and steady the course through the lies and contradictions. We have to hold the line between our own lives, and the world that tries to breach in.

Gratitude is something we could all benefit from. Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means learning to live your life as if everything were a miracle, and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you’ve been given. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present.
